La perugina

Do you want to know the history of Perugina? The history of Perugina begins on November 30, 1907, when the company was founded by partners Francesco Buitoni, Annibale Spagnoli and his wife Luisa, Leone Ascoli and Francesco Andreani. The turning point: in 1915, during the First World War, the factory began to increase its activity and from the exclusive production of confetti added candies, chocolate, and cocoa powder. In the following years, Perugina established itself more and more in its sector and in 1919 opened its first store. Thanks to Luisa Spagnoli, the wife of one of the company’s founders, the real peak of success was reached: the Bacio Perugina took shape, with a heart of gianduia and hazelnuts inside and a soft dark chocolate coating outside. After a series of conflicts between the company’s partners, the Buitoni family prevailed among the others and the company’s corporate name was changed, transforming from Società Perugina to Perugina. Another great success was achieved thanks to the spread of the famous Rossana candy with a heart of rum cream, created to honor Roxanne, the woman so loved by Cyrano de Bergerac. In 1939, Perugina chocolates arrived in America, specifically on Fifth Avenue, the heart of New York. Perugina launched a bag of gianduiotti on the American market at a reduced price, making it accessible to everyone.

In 1972, the merger between Buitoni and Perugina resulted in the birth of Buitoni Perugina industries and from there the company entered the stock exchange, with a capital of 9 billion lire. In 1991 Perugina merged with Nestlé Italiana Spa, which allowed it to gain more prominence, becoming one of the largest Nestlé plants in Europe for chocolate production. In 1997, having accumulated many years of history and passion for chocolate production, the museum was opened to tell the story of this ancient Italian factory through images, packaging, and films. The museum offers a unique and exciting experience for its visitors, who will end their journey with a rich tasting from which they can savor the irresistible delicacies of the Perugina House. It is also possible to visit the interior of the factory, where you can observe the production and packaging lines. There is also a brand new section dedicated to courses suitable for chocolate lovers, divided into Master, Themed Courses, and especially during the Eurochocolate period. For chocolate lovers, Umbria and in particular Perugina are must-see stops!
