Create real works of art with your hands at the Maioliche Artistiche Torretti factory in Deruta! It is not easy to describe the renowned Deruta ceramics without risking sounding rhetorical, given how famous and well-known they are in the world. Suffice it to say that in the historic centre of Deruta there is, due to the importance of this production, a specific regional museum, an expansion of the one founded by the native lawyer Briganti, where a rich exhibition of artifacts is present, as well as spaces for themed exhibitions.

Deruta ceramics find their greatest inspiration in the long period from the second half of the 15th century until the entire 17th century. In these two and a half centuries, various styles developed, such as the “petal back” characterized by simple petal-shaped decorations on the back of plates and “severe style” motifs on the front, or more complex depictions, such as scenes and allegorical themes surrounded by geometric modules (crown of thorns, wolf teeth, embrications, floral scrolls, porcelain), such as portraits, such as Raphael style with the characteristic pastel shades of blue and yellow, less bright than the colors of the Gualdo – Eugubino production, and then the “whites” and the “calligraphic” in blue or orange monochrome. The objects that mark the transition from domestic to ornamental ceramics are large show plates, loving cups, and globular vases with double handles on a high foot. In the 17th century, the compendiary style was also born, proposing essential pictorial motifs applied to complex shapes, almost sculptural, with sinuous contours.
